northeast blizzard. a driving ban in effect. residents shoveling out in parts of connecticut and new york. tonight, the aftermath, extending to our area. >> some incredible images coming in the northeast. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. parts of new england got more than 3 feet of snow. right now, more than hundreds of thousands of people are without cold in the bitter cold temperatures. today, wjz has more from harford, connecticut. >> reporter: people from new york, straight up through new england, are digging out. after a nor'easter dumped more than 3 feet of snow in some areas. >> a lot of cleanup. yeah. we got a snow blower. so my husband is somewhere in the nished, cleaning other -- neighborhood, cleaning other people's houses. so we're finishing up here. >> reporter: highways turned into parking lots overnight. emergency crews move in to rescue dozens of people forced to spend the night in their cars on new york's long tiestled. >> threw some blankets over me,

went to sleep of. >> reporter: in connecticut, workers tried to keep the sidewalks outside of their businesses cleared. >> they keep showing up. >> reporter: they are asking people to stay off the roads so plows can clear the streets. many people would have trouble even getting to their cars. here in harford, many vehicles is are buried under the snow. >> reporter: it's a similar scene in massachusetts. threes -- streets in worcester are digging out their cars. >> this is a lot of snow. i miss my truck. and i miss an indoor garage. [ laughter ] >> reporter: in boston, some residents chose to run or walk before the governor lifted a ban on driving. >> reporter: and along the massachusetts coast, some people had to leave their homes because of flooding. as the storm moves further out to sea, power crews are working to get electricity back to about 650,000 customers. while others are just enjoying this big blast of winter. marley hall -- marlie hall, wjz eyewitness news. and officials say the storm

has caused at least four deaths in the u.s. so far. meanwhile, the winter storm continues to cause several days on the road and in the air and on the roadways for several travelers. wjz's rochelle ritchie has the latest. >> reporter: lucky for us, we didn't see any snow in baltimore. but the it's -- it's still causing a problem for people who are traveling out of our area. >> reporter: penn station travelers consider themselves lucky after dodging numerous cancellations and delays, due to the winter blizzard that piles on top of the northeast. >> i'm up here visiting my daughter autumn for her brirgtd. and i was -- although birthday. and i was really worried the trip up here would be canceled. >> reporter: everything between new york and boston is canceled. and bwi is also having its fair share of travel woes. >> i have a feeling i might be spending the night in the city. >> reporter: many keeping fingers crossed that they'll make it to their final

destination. >> as of right now, it's still on time. >> reporter: bwi had 33 incoming flights canceled and 43 outgoing. >> they canceled flights ahead of storms. >> reporter: crews are working to get runways clear and get everyone back on schedule. >> reporter: and are if those who are travel -- for those who are traveling, looking at the schedule is important. make sure you check if your flight or train has been canceled before you head out. >> thank you so much. reporting live for us tonight. and coming up at 11:00, we'll take a closer look at some of the travel troubles at bwi airport. the wind has been a main factor in our area for the last 24 hours. take a look at this video out of towson, where the wind has been whipping flags around, and keeping residents very bundled up. right now, a live look. it is still windy out there. but it is clear. meteorologist bernadette woods live with an updated look at live doppler radar. i know a couple of people had smaller trees fall on their homes in all of this.

>> the winds were pretty high. but we'll show you the current winds to start out with. they peaked out early this morning. but really held up this afternoon. and they're starting to back off. with that sun starting to set. these winds coming down a notch. and that's a time we're going to see through the overnight. wind gusts still over 20 miles per hour in a couple of areas. but in baltimore, it's down to just 5 miles per hour. earlier today, that was not the case. out in washington county, wind gusts over 50 miles per hour. glen burnie, 51 miles per hour. baltimore city, 48 miles per hour. and bwi marshall, the official peak wind gusts, earlier today was 46 miles per hour. that brought in colder air. that's not going to stick around very long. and we'll have the forecast. adam? >> and no snow for us. check in with wjz for first warning forecast. for details on closings and delays, log onto cbsbaltimore.com. right now, the ground search continues at a popular california resort area for an

ex-los angeles police officer, wanted for three murders. police are searching for the man who posted a manifesto, promising revenge against police officers who he believes got him fired. edward lawrence has the latest tonight for wjz. >> reporter: a familiar sight for residents, big bear lake, 90 miles northeast of los angeles. s.w.a.t. team members are going door to door, searching wooded areas blanketed by snow. and even a popular ski area, looking for ex-lapd officer and naval reservist christopher dorner. >> i think he's long gone. >> reporter: they recovered two long-range rifles ai glock handgun and some ammunition. >> my experience with mr. dorner was overwhelmingly positive. i never saw any indications in him that he was violent or particularly aggressive. >> reporter: lapd is on tactical alert and looking forward, planning extra security for the grammys. >> their problems are very

interesting. because one problem they have, can they get enough cops to police the grammys is this and everybody has been deployed on this. >> reporter: as police spread out, trying to protect themselves from potential targets, john miller says the momentum may have turned. >> they believe that he has shifted from being the hunter to the hunted now. >> reporter: but not a moment of rest for the lapd until dorner is found and captured. in los angeles, edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> and it has been a week since the manhunt began. dorner is a suspect in at least three killings, including one police officer. closer to home, a baltimore county woman stabbed to death in her apartment, while under police protection. katie hatele wasn't supposed to be at her apartment last week when 33-year-old jeffrey michael schifflet broke in. investigators say the pair used to be involved. he was threatening to kill her. police told the 33-year-old to move and they offered to help her, but they say she turned down the often.

they say the victim didn't hide out long enough. >> without telling police, the victim moved back to her apartment in precinct 4 and the suspect, unfortunately, knew to find her there. >> her body was found. two children were inside that home. they were unharmed. one of the children was the victim's 3-year-old daughter. right now, that suspect is in custody. elsewhere in baltimore county tonight, police are looking for a dangerous shoplifter. police say a woman stole a $15 t-shirt. when store employees followed the woman into the parking lot, she got into her car and an employee stood behind the car to prevent the suspect from leaving. that's when the suspect hit the employee and took off. they are searching for the individual now. former governor bob ehrlich's wife may be running for office. she is seeking to replace former anne arundel county executive john leopold. that forum is scheduled for

thursday at the west county library in odenton. applications are due by friday. you might recall that leopold resigned last week, after he was found guilty of two counts of misconduct while in office. a new baltimore program is allowing residents to get their taxes done for free and build up a little savings in the process. it is called the baltimore cash campaign. it is for residents around the baltimore metropolitan area. all you have to do is bring in your social security card. plus a photo id for tax ferm toes. forms. >> i set up an appointment online. it was very easy. >> we try to make that really easy, by encouraging people to split some of their refund into a savings account, into a prepaid card, or by purchasing a u.s. savings bond. >> reporter: the program is run by a nonprofit group that tries to make filing easier for low and moderate income families. today's event was at the mondawmin mall.

no blizzard here. it's mainly clear and 35 degrees. bernadette's complete first warning forecast coming up. but first, a series of car bombings leaves some dead and hundreds injured. yesterday, two exploded at the same time at a vegetable market just south of baghdad. two more bombs were set off in the capital. deadliest day in iraq in two months. first lady michelle obama attends the funeral of a chicago girl who was gunned down just days after performing for the president. mrs. obama was among hundreds of mourners, paying their respects for haddia pendle continue. the honors student was shot and

killed in a park. police say she was not the intended target. pendleton performed with her high school majoret team at the presidential inauguration. a vigil for an ohio hit-and run victim turns into the scene of more crime. a reporter in youngstown was interviewing the victim's family when a car slammed into the crowd, hit several friends, loved ones and then sped away. four people were taken to the hospital. the vigil was held for a man who was also struck by a car last week. police are now interviewing witnesses and searching for who is behind these attacks. well, can you imagine this? an owl in miami finds a new home, right inside the grill of a truck. check out the video. so cool. can you imagine seeing this? the driver had no idea until she saw these yellow eyes looking at her through the grill of the car. [ laughter ] turns out she had actually hit

the bird with the truck and it ended up getting stuck behind the grill. well, check this out. the owl is doing just fine. animal control was able to get it out of the vehicle. they are smart birds they say, right? well, a 9-year-old kid steals the show when it comes to the weather in north dakota. >> 11 degrees in fargo. 10. and then single digits. >> he is getting his hands mixed up. the adorable elementary school student didn't always know where to stand. but he did his homework. took viewers through the weather in the region. list appearance was part of a weekly segment that that tv station does with kids. >> that's cute. >> it is confusing if you've never stood at the weather wall before. >> people always ask that. how long does it take to get used to it? you get used to it pretty quickly. but the first time or couple of

times it is disorienting. >> bernadette is looking at something that is blank behind her. whenever i sit up there and try to make fun of you. yeah, i'll leave that to the pros. too bad we didn't have a big blizzard in their forecast, right? >> i know. some of you are excited we missed out. >> some are bummed we missed out, too. >> it was so close. and so far away. for us, just wind. that's basically what we got out of it. cold and a little rain. cold today. this is where we sit right now. that gusty wind brought in that colder air. wind still out of the northwest. we are going to be on the horizon the next couple of days. and we'll have that forecast coming up.

the snowfall totals are unbelievable. >> 40 inches in connecticut. >> when one of those vans moved over last night, between 5 to 6 inches of snow in an hour. >> in an hour. that's how hard it was coming down. with wind gusts over 80 miles per hour along the cape. >> it must have been whiteout conditions. this is a massive, massive storm that cut through there. and we didn't get one. but winter is not over yet. >> we haven't done within all season. >> nor last year. hopefully. winter is not over yet. just a little chilly out there. but the sun did return. 40 degrees is where we topped out. average is 44 degrees. and we're dropping now with that sundown. down into the 30s for most of us. 45 in baltimore. you can see 30s to the ocean. but already down to 25 in oakland. winds are starting to back off. they were gusty earlier today. and we did have that advisory in effect through 6:00 a.m. but still a sustained wind around 21 miles per hour in elkton. with gusts higher. but that also will back off as we head into the overnight hours. earlier today, look at these

areas that topped out over 50 miles per hour. all the way down to calvert cliffs. for bwi marshall, our peak wind gust is 46 miles per hour that was earlier today. but things have backed off, like we said. and temperature-wise, they're starting to come down with this cold push of air behind that storm system that is now leaving the coast. but look what is behind it. here's more moderate air. this is going to move through here the next couple of days. tomorrow, we get sunshine out there. jump back into the 40s. then we're in the 50s as this storm system moves our way. this was a big one that a lot of people talked about. but this is another big storm making its way out into the plains. blizzard warnings in effect for the plains. winter storm warnings in effect. we're not getting that. we are probably getting rain out of this storm system here. now, if it arrives early sunday night, maybe a little mix to start. but the warm air is going to win out. and we're going to the 50s. and this is going to be in the form of rain for us. it works out like this. high pressure tomorrow. still sunshine. and the clouds start to increase. here's that storm system.

that gets out of here on tuesday. and it will take a little bit for those temperatures to start coming down again. and then another storm comes along this and sort of skirts off to our south. wednesday and thursday, so that keeps the chance for some showers around. although the bulk of the moisture with that next one is going topaz off to the south of us. y-- to pass off to the south of us. on the waters, we have small craft advisories in effect until 1:00 a.m. but the winds come down considerably. dropping down to about 5 knots. forecast for tonight, with that going on, winds backing off. 22 for our overnight low. tomorrow, though, beautiful afternoon. up to 44 degrees. then we jump up to the 50s on monday. but with the rain. now, again, could start overnight, as the mix. but we're going up to 55 degrees. and this is going to be rain. it moves out of here tuesday. maybe showers wednesday into thursday, with that storm to the south. that looks to be about it. adam? >> we are talking spring pretty soon, bern. thank you. make sure to catch the grammys hosted by ll cool jay this
